Low Impact Martial arts, ages 50+

This is not simply an exercise class. It is real martial arts training adapted for adults 50+ who want to remain active, continue learning, and experience the physical and mental benefits of traditional Okinawan martial arts without high-impact training.

Authentic Okinawan Kempo Kata

Students learn traditional Okinawan kata, or forms, performed at a slow, deliberate, low-impact pace. These are genuine martial arts forms rather than movements created specifically for exercise.

Practical Self-Defense Applications

We explain the self-defense techniques contained within the kata so students understand the purpose behind the movements. Those who are comfortable doing so may also practice the applications in a safe, controlled manner.

Progressive Learning

The program provides continued mental and physical challenge. Kata become progressively more detailed and complex as students gain experience, giving participants something meaningful to learn and work toward over time.

Traditional Okinawan Weapons Training

Students can also learn forms using traditional Okinawan weapons, including the Bo Staff, Jo, Sai, Tonfa, Kama, and other Kobudo weapons. Weapons training is also performed slowly and deliberately, emphasizing coordination, control, balance, and technique.

Low Pressure and Accessible

There are no karate uniforms required and no expectation that participants move at the same pace. The focus is on personal improvement, safe movement, learning, and enjoyment.

SOCIAL
CONNECTION

Sense of Community: First State Karate classes provide opportunities to meet new people and form friendships, contributing to a sense of belonging and social interaction.

Teamwork & Communication: Although karate is an individual practice, classes often involve paired exercises that teach cooperation and effective communication.
